Is my computer too old to repair or upgrade?

Computer repair or computer upgrades can be tricky to know when to do them or how much to spend. A very simple rule if it’s 3 years old, it is probably more cost effective to replace it. There are some exceptions to this depending on what you are wanting to do with the computer. Adding memory might be a good option. Updating to a new Windows version, not so much, especially if it’s Windows 8. Replacing the hard drive that has crashed is not cost effective, unless you are willing to replace it with a used hard drive. Reloading the Windows operating system might be a good option, if the drive is in tact, as long as you have the original product key. The biggest problem with reloading Windows it will almost always causes all the add-on software to have to be reloaded. This means you must have the original disks and product keys on all loaded software. Often times the computer owner doesn’t realize this. It is especially true with Microsoft Office (Word/Excel) that they are not part of the Windows operating system.

Reloading the operating system is not an option to get rid of a virus. Any technician that utilizes this method as a primary way to get rid of a virus does not know what they are doing. This operating system reload should only be as a last resort.

If a customer has a computer that is 5 years old and need to spend $200 to fix it I always recommend they consider purchasing a new computer. You might ask about “board level repair”. Yea, we can do that but why? It won’t save you money and if a component on the board went out, there are other reasons. Most manufacturers have proprietary components on the boards and anyone that has real industry knowledge knows this and does not try to fool someone with such deceptive language.

What about cell phone repair? The small circuitry on the board of the cell phone can not be done effectively except in the case of the diode that controls the backlight and even that is tricky. Especially since you have to cut away Considering that we have never in 2 years run across a need or cost effective solution for our customer by doing that diode repair, I doubt we will do it going forward.
